The Water Works and Sewer Board of the City of Prichard, was organized pursuant to Alabama Code Title 37, sections 394-401, as a public corporation, and has been in existence since 1943, operating originally using the name, the Water Works Board of the City of Prichard. In 1953 the name was amended to its current name.
The Water Works and Sewer Board of the City of Prichard's Board of Directors is normally comprised of five (5) members that serve six (6) year staggered terms. The Board members are required to reside in the corporate limits of the City of Prichard, Alabama. Every Board member is appointed by the City Council of Prichard, Alabama, and because of the similarity in the names ( City of Prichard ), we are often thought to be the same, but we are a separate stand – alone entity from the City of Prichard, Alabama.
The Water Works and Sewer Board of the City of Prichard, (here in after “the Board”), currently provides water service only, to the City of Chickasaw, Alabama, and water and sewer service to the Cities of Prichard, Eight Mile, and Whistler, Alabama. The Board services over eleven (11) thousand customers, with an annual operating budget of approximately 10.5 million dollars.
The Board is successful in meeting all obligations to its retirees & beneficiaries, through the Water Works and Sewer Board of the City of Prichard Employees' Pension & Relief Fund; it currently operates with an employee base of over forty-five (45) people. The Board maintains the services of an Attorney, Financial Advisor, Engineering Firm and various other professional services to help meet its growing needs.
This brief synoptic history, clearly indicates that for over seventy-one (71) years, from a small beginning that should not be despised, The Water Works and Sewer Board of the City of Prichard, has endeavored to align itself with the resources to provide economic growth and stability to the company and to the communities in which it serves.
